RALEIGH, NC – First-year Virginia men’s tennis player Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) was named the ACC Rookie of the Year Thursday night at the ACC Tennis Banquet. Stewart becomes the second Cavalier to win the award, joining former Cavalier standout Brian Vahaly who won the award in 1998. In addition, Stewart was also named All-ACC by the conference.
Stewart has been key to the Cavaliers’ strong season which has them ranked No. 37 in the nation, with a 20-7 record. He has posted a 21-4 record at the No. 1 singles position this fall, and is 27-7 overall in singles. His current No. 41 singles ranking is the highest of his career, and the highest for a Cavalier since Vahaly ended 2001 with a No. 2 ranking. In doubles, Stewart has teamed with Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.) for a 15-7 record and a No. 27 national ranking.
The Cavaliers will begin play Friday at the ACC Tournament, being held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh. The No. 5 seeded Cavaliers will play No. 4 seed Wake Forest at 9:00 a.m.
