Four Cavaliers won ACC titles today as the men and women competed in the first day of the ACC Track and Field Championships held in Raleigh, NC. Virginia swept the javelin titles as Brian Kollar won his third ACC Championship in that event and Annie Bobiak won her first. In addition, Kollar’s title marks the fifth consecutive year that a Cavalier has won the javelin as Kollar won in 2000 and 2001 while John Welch won in 1999 and 2002. The women’s distance crew won both events contested tonight as Jane Maxwell won the 10000m run while Dawn Cleary won the 3000m steeplechase. After the first day of competition Virginia’s women sit in second place with 64 points behind UNC’s 107, and the men are in 4th as Florida State leads with 74, followed by NC State (40) and Clemson (39).
Maxwell’s win punctuated a 1-3 fnish in the 10K as Sarah Folse took third in a time of 34:24.22. Maxwell’s time of 33:58.69 is personal best and is the fourth-fastest time in school history as she becomes the first Cavalier since Patty Matava in 1987 to break the 34:00 barrier. Cleary’s time of 10:06.08 was 18 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and is the second-fastest time in school history, just three seconds off her school-record time.
Kollar’s 69.22m is the farthest throw of the season for the Cavaliers. Andy Filachek’s time of 30:02.37 is also the fastest 10K for the Virginia men in 2003 and earned him second place in that event. Cross country teammates Matt Ruhl and Ryan Neuhart took fourth and fifth respectively in the 3000m steeplechase today with Ruhl just edging Neuhart 9:13.62 to 9:14.56. McGavock Dunbar turned in the fastest prelim time in the 800m, running a 1:51.58, qualifying him for the final tomorrow. Scott Kimball also qualified for the finals tomorrow, turning in a 10.77 in the 100m dash.
The Cavaliers also got a pair of sixth-place finishes in a pair of field events as first years Walker Anderson (hammer) and David Sullivan (pole vault) both earned three team points with their respective finishes. Trumaine Pendleton finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.87m.
The women had someone score in every event contested tonight, led by Eliese Mitchell who took third in the discus (51.51m) and fourth in the hammer (53.84m). Mitchell’s discus was her best throw this season. The Cavaliers had two people place in the long jump as reigning USA indoor champion Kiamesha Otey finish third (6.18m) and Caroline Harvey took sixth (5.85m). A pair of Hoos took sixth place in two other events as Viktoria Osipenko took sixth in the pole vault (3.66m) and Rachel Marks took sixth in the high jump (1.65m). First-year Sarah Convery also scored for Virginia with a seventh-place finish in the javelin.
Otey also qualified for the finals in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Harvey will join her in the finals of the 100 while Carielle Doe will also run in the finals of the 200. Doe had the fastest qualifying time in the 400 in a 54.07, which equals her best time of the year. Natalie Randolph also turned in the fastest qualifying time in the 400 hurdles, running a 60.33. The Cavaliers also had a pair of qualifiers in the 1500m run as Sharon O’Connor and Shannon Hawrylo both advanced to tomorrow’s finals.
