The University of Virginia (12-3) used four caused turnovers by Tiffany Schummer, four draw controls by Lauren Aumiller, four goals from Amy Appelt, and a 4-0 start in the first 9:18 to pace a 12-9 victory over the second-seeded and third-ranked Duke Blue Devils (11-3) in the second ACC Semifinal of the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championships held today in Charlottesville. Aumiller assisted on both the first and last goals of the run and added another assist on the fifth goal as Virginia advanced to the ACC Championship game on Sunday, April 20, where they will face Maryland.

Courtney Young started the sequence for the opening goal as she caused a turnover in the Virginia defensive arc and Kim Connors scooped up the ground ball, starting a fast break in which Aumiller fed Cary Chasney, who was on the goal circle. Chasney’s goal 3:29 into the game gave the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish. Lauri Kenis then intercepted a pass into the arc with one hand on her stick and took the ball upfield where she fed the ball into a set attack. In the offense, Appelt drove to the cage and was fouled. On the 8-meter she scored, putting Virginia up 2-0 5:26 into the game. Chasney won the draw and as Morgan Thalenberg raced to the cage, she was fouled, placing her on the 8-meter. She scored on the free position, giving Virginia a 3-0 lead. Meredith Lazarus won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers advanced the ball into their offensive zone where Aumiller set up behind the cage and fed Connors as the first-year cut to the cage. Connors’ goal at 9:18 gave the Hoos a 4-0 lead, forcing Duke to call a timeout.

Duke then erupted for a pair of goals in 26 seconds as Katie Chrest converted a free position from the center hash and then Meghan Walters won the draw for Duke and Katie Laschinger brought the ball behind the cage, where she fed Lauren Gallagher on an opposite post feed. Gallagher converted, making the score 4-2 in favor of Virginia 10:39 into the contest.

Virginia responded as Connors caused a turnover at the Virginia defensive restraining line and picked up the ground ball, taking it upfield where Aumiller attacked from the left, drew a double, and dumped the ball off to Chasney who scored, putting the Hoos back up by three at 16:53. Chasney won the ensuing draw and Virginia worked the ball around in the offensive zone before Caitlin Banks challenged from the top and scored, giving Virginia a 6-2 lead with 10:20 to play in the half. The teams entered halftime with that score, a 6-2 Virginia lead.

Duke’s Meghan Miller won the draw to open the second half and Duke quickly advanced upfield where Kate Kaiser fed Gallagher, who was cutting to the cage. Gallagher’s goal 28 seconds into the second half pulled Duke to within three at 6-3.

The Cavaliers answered right back as Schummer won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers brought the ball upfield where Appelt ran in from the top right corner, scoring 46 seconds after Gallagher to move the margin back to four. A Courtney Muller caused turnover and ground ball right in front of the Virginia cage gave the ball back to the Hoos, and in the attack Appelt dumped the ball down to Aumiller, who was in front of the goal circle. Aumiller converted, putting Virginia up 8-3. Banks then picked up a dropped pass in the midfield and brought the ball upfield where Appelt again raced to the cage and scored, putting Virginia up 9-3 with 15:52 to play in regulation.

Again a pair of quick Duke strikes countered the Virginia run as Erin O’Shaughnessy scored from a wide angle on the left side and Kaiser won the next draw and challenged from the top, scoring less than a minute after Duke’s fourth goal to help the Blue Devils pull within four at 9-5.

Virginia answered right away as Banks won the ensuing draw and challenged, drawing out the defense. Appelt took a feed from Tyler Leachman and scored 44 seconds after the Duke run, putting the Cavaliers up 10-5. A Virginia turnover gave the ball back to Duke, who found Katie Chrest in the midfield. Chrest fed Katie Laschinger, who scored with just over 10 minutes to play and pulling Duke to 10-6.

Lazarus scooped up the loose ball after a Duke shot went wide and sprinted upfield where she found Chasney on the goal line extended. Chasney immediately flipped the ball to Banks, who scored on an open net after the Duke keeper had challenged the pass to Chasney.

Schummer then caused another turnover in the Virginia defensive third and started a clear that was completed as Chasney drove in to the cage, scoring with 4:34 to play and Virginia holding a 12-6 lead.

Duke then scored three goals in a span of 96 seconds as Gallagher took a feed from Kaiser to the cage, Meg Barnet scored from a left angle, and Gallagher picked up a loose ball in front of the Cavalier cage and scored. Gallagher’s fourth goal of the game pulled the Blue Devils to within three at 12-9 with 2:29 to play, but Aumiller won the draw and the Cavaliers killed enough of the clock to hold the Blue Devils at bay.

Aumiller’s three assists give her 91 for her career, and she now ranks 23rd all-time in Division I history in assists. Her goal was the 198th of her career and she now has 289 career points, placing her 14th all-time in Division I.

Virginia advances to play Maryland in the ACC final. The game against the Terrapins will take place on Sunday, April 20 at 12:30 pm.
