The Cavalier women finished third at the ACC Track & Field Championships as four women won titles and the team turned in seven other All-ACC performances. On the men’s side, McGavock Dunbar won the 800 and Brian Kollar won his third ACC javelin title while Andy Filachek took runner-up honors in the 10K as the men finished sixth overall. Carielle Doe won the 400, Jane Maxwell won the 10K, Dawn Cleary took the gold in the steeplechase and Annie Bobiak won the javelin while Kiamesha Otey took silver in both the 100 and 200m dashes and Natalie Randolph was the runner-up in the 400 hurdles while Eliese Mitchell set the school record en route to a silver in the shot put.
Maxwell’s win punctuated a 1-3 fnish in the 10K as Sarah Folse took third in a time of 34:24.22. Maxwell’s time of 33:58.69 is personal best and is the fourth-fastest time in school history as she becomes the first Cavalier since Patty Matava in 1987 to break the 34:00 barrier. Cleary’s time of 10:06.08 was 18 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and is the second-fastest time in school history, just three seconds off her school-record time.
Doe’s time of 53.07 was her fastest time of the year and it marked the first time a Cavalier had won the quarter-mile since 1985. The Cavaliers also took second in the 4x400m relay in a season-best 3:38.31.
Mitchell’s mark of 53′ .25″ broke the school record by 20 inches and she now owns the school records in both the indoor and outdoor shot put, the #20 weight, and the hammer throw. Mitchell also took third in the discus (51.51m) and fourth in the hammer (53.84m). Mitchell’s discus was her best throw this season.
Otey finished second in both the 100 and 200m dashes and was also third in the long jump with a 6.18m, just ahead of Caroline Harvey took sixth (5.85m). Four other Cavaliers took home sixth place finishes in their respective events as Viktoria Osipenko took sixth in the pole vault (3.66m), Rachel Marks took sixth in the high jump (1.65m), Ingrid Marable finished sixth in the triple jump (11.89m), and Sharon O’Connor was sixth in the 1500m run (4:24.90). First-year Sarah Convery also scored for Virginia with a seventh-place finish in the javelin.
Virginia had three scorers in the 5K, more than any other school, as 2003 steeple champion Cleary took fourth and 2003 10K champ Maxwell finished seventh, just behind teammate Ellen Dwyer who was sixth overall.
The Cavaliers swept the javelin titles as Brian Kollar won his third ACC Championship in that event and Annie Bobiak won her first. In addition, Kollar’s title marks the fifth consecutive year that a Cavalier has won the javelin as Kollar won in 2000 and 2001 while John Welch won in 1999 and 2002. Kollar’s 69.22m is the farthest throw of the season for the Cavaliers. Andy Filachek’s time of 30:02.37 is also the fastest 10K for the Virginia men in 2003 and earned him second place in that event. Cross country teammates Matt Ruhl and Ryan Neuhart took fourth and fifth respectively in the 3000m steeplechase with Ruhl just edging Neuhart 9:13.62 to 9:14.56. Ruhl also scored in the 5K, taking fourth again with a 14:20.45.
McGavock Dunbar won the 800 as he became the first Cavalier in 2003 to break the 1:50 barrier. Herb Reid finished just off the podium in fourth in the 110 hurdles, and Tim Bilmanis was also fourth in the discus. Scott Kimball also scored, taking seventh in the 100m dash.
The Cavaliers also got a pair of sixth-place finishes in a pair of field events as first years Walker Anderson (hammer) and David Sullivan (pole vault) both earned three team points with their respective finishes. Trumaine Pendleton finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.87m.
