Virginia Wins Fourth Consecutive ACC Rowing Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team swept all four events Saturday (April 19) on Lake Monticello as the Cavaliers won their fourth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Rowing Championship. Virginia won the novice eight, the varsity four, the second varsity eight and the first varsity eight competitions.
The Cavaliers finished with 40 points to win the team championship. Duke finished second with 29 points followed by Clemson (21) and North Carolina (10).
“I think we did an excellent job today,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I didn’t think the first varsity and second varsity crews rowed up to their capabilities in the morning. I challenged them this afternoon to do more and to do what they’re capable of and they did.”
UVa won the final in the first varsity eight with a time of 6:47.9 and Duke finished second in 6:55.2. Clemson won the petite final in the first varsity eight in 6:55.8 and North Carolina had a time of 7:09.1. The Cavaliers’ first varsity eight crew was comprised of Betty Shumaker (coxswain), Carolyn McMillan, Julie McQueen, Jen Reck, Lindsay Shoop, Molly Baker, Claudia Durkin, Beth Clark and Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer.
In the final of the second varsity eight, Virginia defeated Duke 6:52.9 to 7:08.1. Clemson won the petite final in the second varsity eight 7:09.1 to 7:22.1 over North Carolina. UVa’s second varsity eight crew was made up of coxswain Danielle Sewell, Andrea Czarkowski, Jessie Haury, Katie Yrazabal, Amanda Kennedy, Margaret Matia, Kelley Jesnig, Mary Dobmeier and Crystal MacLeod.
The Cavaliers won the final in the varsity four with a time of 7:44.0 and Duke finished second in 7:57.5. Clemson won the petite final in the varsity four 8:01.4 to 8:24.2 over North Carolina. Virginia’s varsity four crew was comprised of coxswain Launa Forehand, Catelyn Coyle, Julie Creighton, Kelley Dougherty and Jess Busch.
In the final of the novice eight, UVa defeated Clemson 7:02.0 to 7:10.7. Duke won the petite final in the novice eight 7:11.7 to 7:20.4 over North Carolina. The Cavaliers’ novice eight crew was made up of coxswain Karen Richardson, Katie Verhey, Christina Berry, Kim Maxfield, Lexie Zaborowski, Alissa Rubin, Carrie Hatter, Catherine Thrasher and Lauren Cruickshank.
The nine-member All-ACC team is comprised of Molly Baker (UVa), Amelia Booth (Duke), Joanna Hingle (Duke), Kara Kerscher (North Carolina), Emily Kuivila (Clemson), Julie McQueen (UVa), Kate Niebauer (Clemson), Jen Reck (UVa) and Betty Shumaker (UVa, coxswain).
Virginia’s Kevin Sauer was named the ACC Coach of the Year and the UVa first varsity eight was named the ACC Crew of the Year.
“It means a lot to win a fourth consecutive ACC Championship and to be ACC Champions in my final year,” said Molly Baker, a senior member of the Virginia team and one of the Cavaliers’ team captains. “It’s also very meaningful to be a team captain and to help the team win a conference championship.”
