The University of Virginia’s Lauren Aumiller scored twice today as she notched goal #200 and fellow captain Tiffany Schummer had two caused turnovers to move to #2 all-time at Virginia, but the Cavaliers (12-4) lost to top-seeded Maryland (15-1) 11-6 today in the finals of the ACC tournament. Aumiller’s goal with 35 seconds remaining in the game was her 200th career goal as she becomes only the 21st person in the history of Division I lacrosse to score 200 goals. Schummer moved ahead of current assistant coach Gina Sambus with her 108th career turnover today; she, along with fellow line defenders Courtney Muller and Lauri Kenis, had three ground balls.
Maryland’s Annie Collins started the scoring with the conversion of an 8-meter shot five minutes into the game. The Terrapins won the draw but Courtney Young caused a turnover and got the loose ball to start the Virginia possession. The Cavaliers ran the ball upfield and Amy Appelt raced in from the left to score, tying the game at 1-1 28 seconds after Collins’ goal.
A scramble on the ensuing draw saw the ball flipped by Collins up to Sonia Judd, who scored 18 seconds after Appelt to put Maryland back on top 2-1. The Terps controlled the next draw and Walker fed Kelly Coppedge to give Maryland a 3-1 lead 7:27 into the game. The Terrapins then scored three goals ini a span of 2:30, including a pair from Kristie Leggio, to take a 6-1 lead. Walker fed Coppedge again with just over a minute to play to give Maryland a 7-1 lead at the break.
Schummer won the opening draw of the second half for the Cavaliers, but Maryland gained possession and brought the ball upfield where Meredith Lazarus caused a turnover and Andrea Pfeiffer picked up the loose ball. Virginia took the ball into their offensive zone and Aumiller fed an opposite post feed to Morgan Thalenberg, who scored to end the Cavalier drought.
The Terrapins won the draw but Schummer stripped the ball away and got the ball to Lazarus, who sprinted upfield and fed the ball to Caitlin Banks on the left wing. Banks fed to a cutting Cary Chasney, who scored 5:46 into the second half to pull the Cavaliers to 7-3. Schummer’s caused turnover was the 108th of her career, moving her to #2 all-time in the Cavalier charts, edging current assistant coach Gina Sambus, who had 107 from 1999-2002. Maryland pushed the margin back to five as Collins hit a second 8-meter shot with 15:09 to play in regulation.
Chasney won the draw and the Cavaliers set their attack. Appelt rolled the goal circle and dove across the top of the circle, scoring her second goal of the game and pulling Virginia back to within four at 8-4 with 14:00 to go in the half. Maryland scored twice in a span of 63 seconds with goals from Walker and Collins to move ahead by six with just over nine minutes to play, and then added another goal as Walker fed Jess Dorney with 7:24 to go, giving the Terps an 11-4 lead.
A Lauri Kenis ground ball in the defensive arc started the transition for the Cavaliers, who sent Banks behind the cage. Banks dumped the ball into Aumiller, who scored in her 37th consecutive game with a shot to the top of the cage.
With less than a minute to go in the game, Thalenberg picked off an errant Maryland pass at the Virginia offensive restraining line and got the ball to Aumiller, who was fouled at the top of the fan. She raced in from the 12 and scored with 35 seconds to go in the game. Aumiller now has 292 career points and ranks 13th all-time in Division I history.
Virginia’s Muller, Schummer, and Aumiller were named to the all-tournament team, along with Maryland’s Sonia Judd, Kelly Coppedge, Annie Collins and Julie Shank, UNC’s Beth Ames and Andy Fortino, and Duke’s Lauren Gallagher and Meghan Miller. Terp goalie Alexis Venechanos was the tournament MVP.
