Men’s Golf Finishes Seventh at ACC Championship

NEW LONDON, N.C. – The Virginia men’s golf team finished seventh at the 2003 ACC Championship on Sunday.

The No. 1 nationally ranked Clemson Tigers pulled off the greatest comeback in ACC men’s golf history when they rallied with six holes to play to beat out No. 2 Wake Forest by one stroke. Down by nine shots with six holes to play, Clemson unleashed a barrage of birdies, while the Demon Deacons struggled. The Tigers finished the day with a three-under 285 to catapult from third place to their seventh championship title with a 865 (+1). Wake Forest was second with a 866 (+2), while No. 10 North Carolina took third with a 869 (+5). The Cavaliers had their best round of the tourney on the final day, shooting a 294 for a 902 (+38) overall.

Individually, North Carolina junior Richard Treis fired a two-under 70 in the final round to capture medalist honors with a five-under 211. Wake Forest’s Bill Haas finished second with a three-under 213, while Georgia Tech’s Troy Matteson and Clemson’s Jack Ferguson tied for third with a two-under 214.

Cavalier senior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) tied for 15th with 222 (+6) each. Luce fired a three-under 69 in the final round. Freshman Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) shot a 227 (+11) to finish tied for 26th, while freshman Eamonn McLoughlin (Amityville, N.Y.) had a 227 (+17) for 36th place. Freshman Dan Gabel (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with a 241 (+25).

The Cavaliers now await an invitation to the 2003 NCAA Men?s Golf East Regional on May 16-18.
