Charlottesville, Va. – Senior midfielder Billy Glading was named the most valuable player of the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Championships after leading the Cavaliers to their first ACC title in three years. He scored seven goals in the tournament, including a career-high five in the finals vs. Duke. Glading’s five goals in the finals missed the tournament record by one. He missed his chance at tying the record when his final shot to an open net hit the pipe and bounced away.
Glading’s performance this past weekend has also netted him National Player of the Week honors from Inside Lacrosse.
In Virginia’s 13-12 overtime win over North Carolina in Friday night’s semifinal contest, Glading scored the game winner with 1:42 to go in the four-minute period. The Cavaliers built a 12-9 lead with less than three minutes to play, but the Tar Heels stormed back with three unanswered goals in the final 2:25 to force overtime. On the winning play, Glading found himself open in front and took a perfect feed from Joe Yevoli at X and beat goalie Paul Spellman with a quick redirect.
The ACC Tournament capped an amazing week for Glading, who began the week by being named ACC Player of the Week after scoring three goals in UVa’s 11-8 win at Duke on April 12.
Prior to the first game against Duke, Glading had scored eight goals in the first eight games, but he has erupted for 10 goals in the last three and now has 18 on the season.
