SALEM, Va. – Virginia scored five runs in the fourth inning to break open aclose game and defeated Virginia Tech, 10-7, in college baseball actionWednesday night at Salem Memorial Stadium. With the loss, the Hokies fall to27-12 overall, while Virginia is now 24-16 on the season.

With Tech leading 4-3 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, designatedhitter Eric Christiansen and catcher Scott Headd singled to open the inning.Rightfielder Matt Street singled in Christiansen and leftfielder PaulGillispie doubled in Headd and Street. Shortstop Matt Dunn scored on a passedball and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman doubled in Gillispie, making the score8-4, Cavaliers.

Virginia opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, when firstbaseman Joe Koshansky singled in Street. Tech took the lead, 3-2, in the topof the third inning when senior second baseman Marc Tugwell (Springfield, Va.)doubled in senior first baseman Chris Winterfeldt (Lynchburg, Va.), who hadwalked. Tugwell scored on sophomore catcher Wyatt Toregas’ (Ashburn, Va.)sixth home run of the year.

Virginia scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning whenStreet scored on an error by freshman leftfielder Sheldon Adams (Big StoneGap, Va.). Zimmerman then singled in Koshansky to tie the score at 3-3.

After the five run fourth for the ‘Hoos, the Hokies closed the score to 9-6 inthe top of the six inning when Tugwell homered to left to drive in sophomorethird baseman Chris Stanton (Centreville, Va.), who had reached on a buntsingle. The home run was Tugwell’s seventh of the year. Virginia opened thelead to 10-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning, as centerfielder Chris Sweettripled in Zimmerman. Tech scored the final run in the top of the ninth, whenToregas doubled, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a balk byreliever Canon Hickman.

Tugwell and Toregas each had three hits for the Hokies. Ryan Zimmerman hadfour hits for Virginia in the victory.

Freshman starter M.J. Hurley (Wilmington, N.C.) took the loss for the Hokies,falling to 2-2 on the season. Alan Zimmerer (2-0) picked up the victory inrelief for the Cavaliers.
