CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia Athletic Department will host the annual Virginia Sports Turf Managers Association (VSTMA) Field Day activities on July 16. The event begins with a tailgate reception at the Carl Smith Center, home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium on July 15.
VSTMA’s Field Day activities are open to all professional and amateur field managers in the state, including high school and college coaches. Individuals do not have to be a member of VSTMA to attend.
“This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who works with athletic and recreation fields in the state of Virginia to obtain useful information on how to better maintain their fields,” said Bob Studholme, a turf specialist with the Fairfax County Park Authority and president of VSTMA. “Several outstanding educational sessions are scheduled at what we feel is a very reasonable cost.”
Session topics at the VSTMA Field Day include aerification, baseball mound construction and renovation, baseball infield care, sand versus modified native versus soil fields, cool season and warm season fertilization, weed identification and control, and growth regulators and bio stimulants. Among the speakers scheduled to participate are Chad Mulholland, head groundskeeper for the Richmond Braves baseball team; Rodney Hopkins of the Richmond Strikers soccer team; and Dr. Shaun Ashkew and Dr. Eric Ervin of Virginia Tech.
There is no charge for VSTMA members to attend the Field Day activities. The cost for non-members is $10 if they pre-register before July 1 and $20 after July 1. Individuals must pre-register by July 1 to reserve lunch on July 16.
