Virginia’s Andrea Pfeiffer made 11 saves, including six in the second half, helping the Cavaliers (13-4) defeat Vanderbilt 13-8 today in the final home game of the 2003 regular season. Fifth year Lauri Kenis led the Cavalier defensive effort with six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while fellow captain Tiffany Schummer also had three caused turnovers. Offensively, the Hoos were led by Caitlin Banks, who had six goals in the game, including a string of five consecutive for Virginia. Cary Chasney had six draw controls to pace the Cavaliers on the restarts.

Chasney won the opening draw for the Cavaliers and Virginia got off a shot, but it was saved by Vandy’s Ashley Bastinelli. Vanderbilt brought the ball upfield where Pfeiffer made her opening save, keeping the Commodores at bay. Virginia lost possession of the ball, but Schummer caused a turnover and Courtney Young scooped up the loose ball for the Cavaliers. The Virginia offense brought the ball upfield and Amy Appelt drove to the cage, and she was fouled on the way. She scored on the 8-meter shot, putting Virginia up 1-0 3:30 into the contest.

A Vandy draw control resulted in another Commodores’ shot, but Pfeiffer made another save and Lindsay Buchanan picked up the ground ball. Virginia got the ball to Kim Connors, who fed Appelt at the top of the offensive zone. Appelt raced in, eluded a defender, and scored, putting Virginia up 2-0. Vandy’s Michelle Allen rolled the crease seven minutes later and scored, cutting the deficit to 2-1 13 minutes into the game.

Kenis picked up a ground ball off a Commodores’ overthrow and Meredith Lazarus raced the ball into the attack. Banks took the ball to the net but was fouled. She scored off the 8-meter, giving Virginia a two-goal lead halfway through the first period. Four minutes later Vanderbilt’s Lauren Peck converted an 8-meter herself, pulling the ‘Dores within one yet again.

Pfeiffer picked up a missed feed into the arc and Virginia cleared the ball upfield, where Appelt was fouled on a drive to the cage. She converted the 8-meter shot for her ninth hat trick of the season and the 19th of her career. Vanderbilt answered with a draw control and a pass from Jeannie Crawley to Jess Roguski, keeping the Commodores within one at 4-3.

Chasney won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers got the ball behind the cage to Ashleigh Haas. Haas drove from behind, slipped through a double team, and scored just over a minute after Vandy, extending the lead to two once again. Vanderbilt won the draw, but Kenis caused a turnover in the arc and got the ground ball but was fouled. On the restart, Virginia executed a fast break that was completed as Aumiller raced in from the top, scoring in her 38th consecutive game and giving the hosts a 6-3 lead.

Morgan Thalenberg picked up a Commodore overthrow at the restraining line and raced back upfield where she drew a double team on the way to the cage and dumped the ball to Banks, who scored with 1:53 to go in the half, sending the teams to the break with the Cavaliers holding a 7-3 lead.

Vanderbilt erupted for three goals in the first 6:12 of the second half as Mary McCeney, Tara Schmucker, and Michelle Allen all scored for the Commodores, pulling Vandy back within one at 7-6 with 23:48 to play in regulation.

Vandy got possession but an overthrow in the arc was picked up by Schummer and the Cavaliers started a fast break that saw Banks roll around the crease, scoring 9:28 into the half to end the Vandy run. Connors won the ensuing draw and Virginia quickly set up behind where Thalenberg fed Banks for a quick stick goal, putting Virginia back up by three in a span of 68 seconds.

A Pfeiffer save set up the next goal as Virginia took the ball upfield and Banks drew a foul, converting on the 8-meter to put the Cavaliers in double digits and extending the lead to 10-6 with 11:53 to play in regulation. Vandy’s Schmucker stopped the run with a goal at 53:49.

Banks won the draw and the Cavaliers spread their attack. Chasney almost lost the ball but recovered it with her defender behind her. She took off towards the cage and dumped the ball to Banks, who flipped the ball into the net, scoring her sixth goal of the game and her fifth in a row. Vanderbilt’s Crawley won the draw and raced behind where she fed Allen, who scored 13 seconds after Banks.

Schummer won the next draw and brought the ball upfield, sending it over to Aumiller, who sent it back across the field to Appelt, who caught the ball on her way to the cage and scored 18 seconds after Allen. Appelt’s goal was the 100th of her career, making her the fastest Cavalier to reach the century mark as it comes in her 36th game. The Cavaliers stalled for the final three minutes of the game before Thalenberg fed Aumiller who was alone in the arc and scored on an empty net with eight seconds to play, making the final score 13-8 in favor of the Cavaliers.
