INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Virginia finished sixth in the team competition at the 2003 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships at Eagle Creek Reservoir on Sunday (June 1). Virginia’s first varsity eight crew finished fifth, the second varsity eight finished seventh and the varsity four finished eighth on the final day of the three-day event.
Harvard won the team championship with a total of 59 points followed by Brown (57), Washington (55), Michigan (51), California (43), Virginia (41), Princeton (38), Ohio State (38), Stanford (33), Yale (27), Michigan State (16) and Washington State (10).
Harvard won the Grand Final in the first varsity eight with a time of 6:26.92 followed by Michigan (6:28.58), Stanford (6:29.54), Washington (6:30.07), Virginia (6:31.49) and Southern California (6:38.33).
The Cavaliers’ first varsity eight crew was comprised of coxswain Betty Shumaker, Molly Baker, Julie McQueen, Jen Reck, Lindsay Shoop, Beth Clark, Tammy Clark, Carolyn McMillan and Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer.
Virginia won the Petite Final in the second varsity eight with a time of 6:38.28 to finish seventh overall in the event. Yale was second in the second varsity eight Petite Final in 6:40.05 followed by Michigan (6:40.32), Michigan State (6:40.92), Washington State (6:43.58) and Stanford (6:45.60).
UVa’s second varsity eight crew was comprised of coxswain Danielle Sewell, Andrea Czarkowski, Jessie Haury, Katie Yrazabal, Amanda Kennedy, Margaret Matia, Claudia Durkin, Mary Dobmeier and Kelley Jesnig.
Brown won the Grand Final in the second varsity eight with a time of 6:35.03 followed by Washington (6:38.57), California (6:39.67), Princeton (6:41.99), Harvard (6:42.43) and Ohio State (6:43.80).
Washington won the Petite Final in the varsity four in 7:38.02 and Virginia was second in 7:39.05. The Cavaliers’ varsity four crew finished eighth overall in the event. Michigan State finished third (7:40.01) in the varsity four Petite Final followed by Washington State (7:43.04), Princeton (7:45.09) and Stanford (7:56.00).
UVa’s varsity four crew was comprised of coxswain Launa Forehand, Kim Maxfield, Kelley Dougherty, Julie Creighton and Crystal MacLeod.
Brown won the Grand Final in the varsity four with a time of 7:18.83 followed by California (7:21.43), Michigan (7:24.83), Ohio State (7:30.02), Yale (7:32.51) and Harvard (7:34.79).
Virginia has finished in the top seven in the team competition at each of the seven NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships. The Cavaliers finished fourth in 1997, third in 1998, second in 1999, third in 2000, seventh in 2001 and fourth in 2002.
Virginia, Brown, Princeton and Washington are the only schools to earn team invitations to each of the seven NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships.
