News and notes form a broadcaster’s notebook…..
ACC expansion tour continues….Boston College and Syracuse will receive visits this week from ACC big wigs and I think we can look for an announcement in the next few days. Official invitations, at least invitations that have been public, have not been sent yet….but they are on the table. The site visits are mandatory according to ACC bylaws, and while they are considered mere formalities, they could be critical steps in the conference’s bid to lure three top programs. Stay tuned.
Congratulations to Todd Goodale, our director of Video Services and the producer of “Hoovision” during Virginia football games. Todd knocked a nine iron in the hole…#11 at Glenmore here in Charlottesville, during a tournament for his first career hole in one. Todd, and his wife Tamar just became parents this past January. What a year, huh?
Virginia head lacrosse coach Dom Starsia, trying to find time to celebrate his team’s national title, spent the better part of three days appearing on talk shows and answering e-mails. Last Thursday, while visiting the WINA morning show, Dom told our audience that the run to the championship…which included victories over every team on the schedule and a school record 15 wins…was “a journey of discovery…” Amen. Dom’s leadership has been inspirational and his kids love to play for him. When he barks, they listen…and produce.
I don’t have enough information on the Ahmad Brooks story yet, but everyone is asking. Brooks, the all everything linebacker who was expected to make a major impact for the Cavaliers this fall has got himself tangled up with a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. Details are very sketchy…and all we really know is he was arrested May 17th in Prince William County and has a July 29th court date. UVA Head Coach Al Groh won’t comment until then.
One of the ACC’s “broadcasting institutions”, Woody Durham…Voice of the North Carolina Tar Heels, has signed a new five year agreement with the ‘Heels and Learfield Communications. A ’63 graduate of UNC, Woody has had a passion for the business and radio play by play for over 32 years. I know I speak for all of us in the league who work with him it just wouldn’t be the same if Woody wasn’t wearing the headset.
Congratulations are also in order for Kevin Sauer, Virginia’s rowing coach. The Cavaliers’ women’s rowing team which has become an annual contender for the NCAA championship finished 6th this past week-end in Indianapolis. Harvard won the overall team competition. The Wahoos have finished in the top seven in the team competition in each of the seven NCAA Rowing Championships. Only Brown, Princeton, Washington and Virginia have received invitations to all seven NCAA championship events.
Would someone please tell me why Matt Schaub is not getting the spring and summer “Heisman hype” he should be receiving by now? In a recent ESPN story 15 Heisman hopefuls were listed and Schaub was not on that list. Are you kidding me? He is one of three conference “players of the year” to return this season and has all the numbers to support his cause. ACC 2002 Coach of the Year Al Groh has been telling Virginia fans all spring during the Virginia Athletic Foundation socials that Matt would have won his award without him….but he would not have won Coach of the Year in the ACC without Schaub. Matt will be around all summer working out, throwing….and signing. His autograph is now a hot item in the Charlottesville area.
