The Virginia Cavaliers will send six athletes to the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California. The meet starts on Wednesday, June 11 and continues through Saturday, June 14. Virginia’s Kiamesha Otey will compete in both the long jump and the 200m, while five teammates will compete in one event each.
Otey is the reigning USA champion in the indoor long jump and earned All-American honors in the long jump in 2002. She won the long jump at the ACC Outdoor Championships and finished second in the 200m dash at both the indoor and outdoor meet.
Brian Kollar will compete in the javelin for the third time in his collegiate career. He has earned All-American honors twice, taking second at the NCAA meet in 2000 and finishing sixth in 2001 before redshirting the 2002 season. He is a three-time ACC champion in the javelin and holds the UVa and ACC record for the event.
Eliese Mitchell will compete in the shot put after receiving an at-large bid based on her school-record toss of 16.16 m at the ACC meet in April. Mitchell holds four school records, including both the indoor and outdoor shot put as well as the weight throw and the hammer. This is her second trip to the NCAA meet.
Sarah Folse and Jane Maxwell will both compete in the 10000m run on Thursday, June 12. Folse and Maxwell have both competed at the NCAA cross country championships. Folse finished second on the team and 72nd overall in 2001 when the Cavaliers finished ninth as a team, and Maxwell led the Cavalier contingent in 2002, finishing 75th overall. Maxwell won the ECAC title in the 10K in 2002.
Dawn Cleary is returning to the NCAA Championships where she competed in the steeplechase in 2002. The school record holder in the event with a 10:03.13, Cleary ranked ninth nationally in the steeplechase last year and finished 10th in 2002 at the US National meet. She won the ACC title in 2003.
