Two Virginia Rowers Earn All-America Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Junior Jennifer Reck (Grosse Point Park, Mich.) and senior Lindsay Shoop (Charlottesville, Va.) of the 2003 University of Virginia women’s rowing team’s first varsity eight crew have earned first-team All-America honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA).

Five members of Virginia’s first varsity eight crew are All-South Region selections by the CRCA. Senior Molly Baker (Burke, Va.), sophomore coxswain Betty Shumaker (San Diego, Calif.), Reck and Shoop earned first-team All-South Region honors, and senior Julie McQueen (Annandale, Va.) is a second-team All-South Region selection.

It’s the second consecutive year Reck has earned first-team All-America and All-South Region honors.

In addition, Reck is a National Women’s Rowing Scholar-Athlete by the CRCA for the second consecutive year. In order to be considered for the award, an individual must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average, be in at least her second year of eligibility and have rowed with her school’s first varsity eight crew for at least 75 percent of the 2003 season’s races.

Virginia’s first varsity eight crew finished fifth at the 2003 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships and the Cavaliers were sixth in the final team standings. UVa is one of just four schools to compete in each of the seven NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships.
