Five Cavalier alumni and a head coach were drafted in the inaugural VERSUSlax draft this week and will play in the inaugural game of the league tomorrow, Saturday, June 21 in Medford, NJ. VERSUSlax is a league that is exploring the foundation of a professional women’s lacrosse league in the United States as the lacrosse community gears up to host the 2005 IFWLA World Cup.
Virginia’s Bonnie Rosen, Cherie Greer, Stephy Samaras, Lauren Aumiller, and Lauri Kenis and head field hockey coach Jess Wilk were all drafted and will play in the opening game on Saturday at Lenape High School in Medford, NJ. Rosen, Wilk and Samaras will play for team BLACK and Greer, Aumiller and Kenis are members of team BLUE.
All six athletes are members of the USA National Teams program as Rosen, Greer, Aumiller, Kenis and Wilk are on the USA Elite team while Samaras is a member of the USA Developmental team.
Greer and Wilk have both won three world titles (1993, 1997, 2001) and are both captains of the squad. Rosen was a teammate of theirs for both the 1997 and 2001 cups.
Aumiller graduated in 2003 as Virginia’s all-time leading scorer and ranks eighth all-time in Division I history with 320 career points. She was a two-time National Midfielder of the Year by Inside Lacrosse. Samaras graduated as Virginia’s all-time leader in caused turnovers and earned All-American honors in 2000. Kenis is a two-time first team All-American (2001, 2003) and ranks fourth all-time in caused turnovers.
The second game of the inaugural VERSUS season will take place on July 19 in Kent Island, Maryland.
