CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia baseball player Andrew Dobies (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), who is currently playing for the Staunton Braves in the Valley Baseball League (VBL), was named the VBL Pitcher of the Week following his performances on games played from the start of the season through Sunday, June 15th.

Dobies, a rising third-year lefthanded pitcher for UVa, made two starts for Staunton and has a record of 1-1 with a 3.00 earned run average (ERA). He has posted a league-high 28 strikeouts after 15 innings on the mound in two games. Dobies started and won the Braves’ season-opener at Waynesboro on June 6th, holding the Generals to just three hits (all singles), while striking out 15 batters and walking just one over seven shutouts innings in the Braves’ 9-1 victory.

Dobies made his second start against Waynesboro on June 13th and allowed five runs on 12 hits over eight innings in taking the loss, as the Braves fell 5-2. However, he did not walk a batter and tallied 13 more strikeouts to give him an eye-opening 28:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio through two games of play.

Dobies started 12 of the 14 games he appeared in as a starting pitcher for the Virginia Cavaliers during the 2003 season. He finished the year with a record of 6-3 on the mound and a 3.84 ERA. Dobies recorded a team-high 72 strikeouts and 79.2 innings pitched and held opposing hitters to a .287 batting average.
