COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Virginia graduate Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) has been named to USA Swimming’s Open Water Team. DeMarco, who is one of four men’s swimmers named to the team, will represent the United States in the FINA Open Water World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, July 13-19. He will swim the 5K and 10K Open Water races.
DeMarco earned a spot on the team after winning the 2003 10K Open Water Championships June 1 in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. DeMarco won the race with a time of 1 hour, 57 minutes, 45.21 seconds. In August of 2002, DeMarco won the 2002 5K Open Water National Championship in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in his first open water race. He then won the Cayman Island 5K Open Water Race in the Cayman Islands on October 26, 2002.
DeMarco earned All-America three times while at UVa. He captured honorable mention All-America accolades in 2001, 2002 and 2003. His top finish at the NCAA Championships was a ninth-place performance in the mile in 2003.
