UVa’s DeMarco Competes In Open Water World Championships

BARCELONA, Spain – University of Virginia graduate Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South), a member of the USA Open Water Team, finished 12th in the 5K FINA Open Water World Championships July 13 and then placed 23rd in the 10K Open Water race Wednesday (July 16).

In the 5K race, DeMarco finished 12th and was the top American finisher. He registered a time of 53 minutes and 31 seconds, while Russia’s Evgeni Kochkarov won the race with a time of 53 minutes and 11.9 seconds.

DeMarco placed 23rd in the 10K race Wednesday with a time of 1 hour, 53 minutes and 56.6 seconds. He was the second American to finish, as Patrick Dideum was 16th. Russia’s Vladimir Diattchine took the 10K title with a time of 1 hour, 50 minutes and 58.8 seconds.

DeMarco earned a spot on the team after winning the 2003 10K Open Water Championships June 1 in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. DeMarco won the race with a time of 1 hour, 57 minutes, 45.21 seconds.

DeMarco was a three-time All-American in the 1650 freestyle at UVa. He captured honorable mention All-America accolades in 2001, 2002 and 2003. His top finish at the NCAA Championships was a ninth-place performance in the mile in 2003.
