WINA MORNING TEAM (Dick Mountjoy, Jane Foy, Mac McDonald)

DICK MOUNTJOY: We need a quarterback, we got one?

MAC MCDONALD: We’re going to find ourselves a quarterback. Let’s bring to the telephone, on the air, the nation’s leading, returning quarterback, he set or tied 10 records, ACC player of the year, and he looks darn good in a tux: Matt Schaub. How about that for an introduction?

Matt Schaub: (Laugh) That was a good one.

JANE FOY: Good morning Matt, how are you?

SCHAUB: I’m doing well. How are you?

FOY: Oh just dandy, thanks. Nice to have you on the phone this rather early hour.

SCHAUB: It’s great to be up this early and awake actually.

MAC: You’ve got an eight o’clock class, right?

SCHAUB: I do.

MAC: Get the finals done and taken care of. Matt, how’s the summer going?

SCHAUB: It’s been going really well. Been working hard, training and throwing, getting ready for the season and taking a few classes on the side.

MAC: You tired of signing autographs yet?

SCHAUB: Not just yet, I don’t mind doing that.

MAC: The Heisman hype has started and that’s one of the reasons we have Matt on this morning. Our guest, Matt Schaub, is returning quarterback, one of the leaders in the nation. There are only three conference players of the year returning and Matt is one of them. He is on the Heisman list, not getting a lot of hype, but the hype is going to start in a little bit and we’re going to talk about that. Tomorrow the web site launches, and that’s our announcement. That’s why we want to talk to Matt; It’s schaub4heisman.com.Matt with all the hype and everything, you’re excited about the web site. How have you handled the hype? And is it fun?

SCHAUB: It has been extremely fun, it’s been a great time. The whole process, all the things that went into it and all the hard work that a lot of different people have put into it has been tremendous. I really appreciate all everyone has done for me. And doing that is only going to help get our team’s name out there and our program keep going on the up and up. It’s been a fun experience and you only go through it once in a lifetime, so I’ve been trying to enjoy it and just have fun with it.

MAC: Isn’t it hard not to just get caught up in all this though? I mean you are big man on campus right now; you’re the big man on the grounds.

SCHAUB: It’s been hard at times, but I have a good group of friends that keep me level headed. And I do a pretty good job at that myself. I just had to remain focused on what needed to be done here this off-season and just carry it into the season.

MAC: I used Ryan Sawyer’s quote the other night when we got together. Ryan your roommate says “Hey, he still has to take out the garbage. He might be a Heisman candidate, but he still has to do the garbage thing.”

MAC: Matt Schaub is our guest, #7,returning quarterback for the Cavs with the Heisman hype and we’ll talk more about his web site. Your mom is going to be chatting on the site, I understand. There are going to be Schaub baby pictures too?

SCHAUB: “I monitored those. My mom sent some up, but I made sure to go through those before any were put on there.

FOY: Oh, no of those little ones on the blanket

MAC: with the bare bottom

SCHAUB: Oh there’s a couple in there, but

MAC: Oh cheesecake

SCHAUB: But all the ones that were damaging to my reputation I had to pull out of there.

MAC: I understand there is one Schaub little baby holding a football?

SCHAUB: Yes, yes.

FOY: And this is going to be on the web site?

MAC: Yes. It’s a very interactive site. There will be Matt Schaub chats. There’ll be some audio, some stuff from his mom, and talk about games. And it will go throughout the season. Matt, I know you got a great invitation next week to go to San Diego for the Elite 11, that’s a very, very nice invitation, huh?

SCHAUB: Yes I was invited to go out to San Diego and work a football camp for11 or 12 rising senior quarterback’s in high school. I think there are 5 of us college quarterbacks invited to go out there and work this camp for them and teach them all about what it’s like being a college quarterback. You know, studying film, reading defenses, just the little nuances that go into it that you might not learn in high school.

MAC: Matt Schaub our guest, cavalier quarterback who will be returning. The summer break ends, when do you get back into camp now and welcome the freshman and really get down to business before the Duke game?

SCHAUB: Tues, August 5th is when we report to camp.

MAC: That’s everyone, all the first years will be in…

SCHAUB: That’s everyone.

MAC: This has got to be exciting! Is it great your last year? Anticipation? I mean a little anxiety, are you excited about this?

SCHAUB: I’m very excited, I’m ready to get going right now. We’re excited for our season. The whole team’s getting antsy and ready for camp. These next few weeks will be full of anticipation. We just want to get started. But then once it’s here its just non-stop, it goes everyday. It’s going to fly by.

MAC: And of course you have to do a good job handling the media. I asked Matt if a lot of mail was rolling in and Matt said he’s getting about10-15 letters per week. They’re coming in by the football office. It’s not like boxes and boxes of mail but he’s got a lot of people helping.

FOY: Oh it’s just the beginning you know.

MAC: Yeah but just some people helping with mail because he’s signing stuff everyday. I mean the request for Matt’s signature, that’s why I was kidding him about whether he’s tired of signing stuff. What about in the community? Are you being recognized when you go to stores or go to a restaurant and have a meal?

SCHAUB: I do, there’s some of that. It’s different, that’s for sure. It’s not something that happens everyday, but occasionally someone will notice and say congratulations on the last year and how are things looking this year and what not.

MAC: Our guest Matt Schaub. Duke August 30th will be the opener. They go into camp August 5th, but tomorrow the web site launches. Matt, I think it’s going to go as early as possible, like maybe 8 am tomorrow morning or something like that. It may even go at midnight tonight so people can start to look for it. I know you’ll wake up in the morning before your eight o’clock class to see if it’s there, right? Have you seen the design of the web site?

SCHAUB: I have. Whenever I stop by the Media Relations office to do a few things, some interviews or whatever. I’ve seen how it’s transformed over time from the beginning stages to what it’s looked like recently.

MAC: Good luck, have a great trip next week to San Diego. Get back safely. And we’ll look for the web site tomorrow. We’ll go ahead and log on tomorrow or tonight to see if it’s there. It is the launching of Matt’s Heisman web site, shcaub4heisman.com. And we’ll keep up with it.

FOY: Congratulations Matt and will you come and see us if you can?

SCHAUB: I will most certainly do so.

FOY: Ok we won’t wake you up real early. When your eight o’clock class is over we’ll bring you in at nine, we’ll give you an extra half-hour.

MAC: And we won’t laugh at the baby pictures either.

SCHAUB: I hope not.

MAC: Alright Matt, have a good one.

MOUNTJOY: Yeah thanks Matt. And don’t forget the game is six weeks from this Saturday. So don’t miss it. We’ll need him.

MAC: Is he not a wonderful kid?

MOUNTJOY: He is.
