Virginia’s Wagner Wins Silver Medal In Pan American Games

SANTO DOMINGO – Fourth-year University of Virginia swimmer Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) won the silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2003 Pan American Games Wednesday evening (August 13) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Wagner swam a personal best time in earning the silver medal.

After recording the top time in the preliminaries of the 200 backstroke (2:02.13), Wagner clocked a time of 2:00.74 to finish second to Brazil’s Romero Rogerio (1:59.92) and earn the silver medal.

Wagner is one of four Cavaliers competing on the USA Swimming team at the Pan American Games. Also on Wednesday, second-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) exhibitioned the 400-meter freestyle and turned in a lifetime best of 4:14.13, which would have earned the bronze medal. It was also the top time in the preliminaries.

Second-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy), the 2003 ACC Swimmer of the Year, will compete in the 400-meter freestyle Thursday. On August 12, Crippen exhibitioned the 400-meter individual medley and posted a time of 4:23.49. His time would have placed him sixth overall.

Third-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson), the two-time defending ACC champion in the 200 butterfly, will swim that event on Friday.
