The Cavaliers’ Kirk Dinnall (Newton, Mass./Beaver Country Day) scored the first goal of the match to give Virginia a 1-0 lead at the 20:27 mark of the first period after Adam Cristman (Glen Allen, Va./Godwin) got things started on the play. Dinnall gathered a pass from Cristman near midfield and then weaved through the ODU defense before firing a strong shot that found its way into the back of the Monarchs’ goal. It appeared Virginia was going to take its one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime, but with less than :30 remaining on the clock, Old Dominion made a charge. ODU’s Kevon Harris played a long cross upfield to a streaking Attila Vendegh that resulted in a goal for Old Dominion. Vendegh pulled in Harris’ pass and then fired a one-timer to knot the score at 1-1 at the 44:40 mark. The two teams entered halftime tied at 1-1.

In the second period of play, neither team was able to score a goal and both squads made mass substitutions in a half that was evenly played. Both squads took six shots and had several opportunities to score the go-ahead marker, but neither team was able to net the game-winning goal. The contest resulted in a 1-1 tie.
