EAST LANSING, Mich. – The 2003 Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its preseason trip to Michigan with a 1-1 tie with Michigan State in a Friday afternoon exhibition contest. The No. 11 Cavaliers went 1-0-1 on the trip, defeating Oakland 9-1 earlier in the week.
The Cavaliers dominated the scoring chances in the contest, outshooting the Spartans 27-3 in the game. However, Virginia did not get on the scoreboard until the 74th minute as second-year midfielder Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) scored on an assist from first-year Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). The Spartans would equalize three minutes later as Linsey Laskowski scored off of Emily Wiegand’s cross. The game would stay deadlocked until the end of regulation and the teams decided to play one ten-minute overtime period, which produced no goals.
Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.), Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Erin Lycan (Hixson, Tenn.) all saw action in goal for Virginia, while Stacy Heller made 13 saves for Michigan State.
The Cavaliers’ 2003 regular season campaign opens on Saturday, August 30 as the Cavaliers host West Virginia at 1:00 p.m. at Kl?ckner Stadium.
