CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #14 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team played to a scoreless tie against the South Carolina Gamecocks in an exhibition match at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium. Both teams had several opportunities to net a goal, but solid goalkeeping and a few shots off the crossbar of the goals resulted in a 0-0 tie. There was no an overtime period played in the match.
UVa outshot USC by one (11-10) and had one more corner kick (7-6) but was unable to put in a goal. The highlight of the match for both teams occurred in the second half of play when the Cavaliers’ Mike Littlefield attempted a “bicycle” shot in the Gamecocks’ box that was snagged out of the air by USC goalkeeper Bradley Guzan, who gathered four saves in the match. UVa’s Ryan Best posted two saves between the pipes for the Cavaliers.
With the tie, Virginia ends it 2003 exhibition season with a record of 0-0-2. The match was South Carolina’s only exhibition of the 2003 preseason.
The Cavaliers will return to action on August 29th and 31st when UVa hosts the 2003 Virginia Soccer Classic. UVa will be joined by the Akron Zips, the Saint Louis Billikens and the Seton Hall Pirates in the four-team tournament field. Virginia’s first game of the event will be on Friday, August 29th against Seton Hall in what will be the Cavaliers’ 2003 regular season opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM at Kl?ckner Stadium. Prior to the UVa/SHU contest, Akron will face Saint Louis at 5:00 PM. On Sunday, August 31st, Akron will face Seton Hall at noon before Virginia meets Saint Louis at 2:30 PM. All four games of the tournament will be played at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium.
