CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia men’s head basketball coach Pete Gillen announced Monday (August 25) that 6-10 senior center Nick Vander Laan is transferring from Virginia. Vander Laan is expected to attend Concordia University in Irvine, Calif., during the 2003-04 academic year.

“We appreciate all that Nick did for us on and off the court the last two years,” Gillen said. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Vander Laan, who is from Sacramento, Calif., played one season for the Cavaliers after transferring from the University of California-Berkeley. He averaged 5.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 15.3 minutes played a game during the 2002-03 season when he played in 31 games and started 14 for UVa. Vander Laan practiced with Virginia, but did not play in games during the 2001-02 season after transferring from California.
