DALLAS, Texas – University of Virginia sophomore Wali Lundy (Willingboro, N.J.) is a candidate for the 2003 Doak Walker Award, the SMU Athletic Forum announced on its preseason list of 39 candidates.

The Doak Walker Award is awarded annually to the nation’s top college running back.

“We have another outstanding list of candidates for the Doak Walker Award. It should be a very exciting college football season, and we look forward to watching the progress of each of these student-athletes this fall,” said Randall Goss, chair of the SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors.

The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select eight semifinalists on Nov. 19, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote on the winner in late November. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, print and electronic media members and selected special representatives.

The recipient of the 2003 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN along with other NCFAA member awards on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 11. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at The Fairmont Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Feb. 12, 2004.

A 2002 Freshman All-American, Lundy had an outstanding freshman season last fall. The only player to finish in the top 10 in the ACC in both rushing and receiving, he became the first freshman to achieve both top 10 categories. Following a four-touchdown performance against West Virginia in the Continental Tire Bowl, Lundy earned Most Valuable Player honors. The All-ACC Freshman was named ACC Rookie of the Week twice during his inaugural season. He finished the season as the team leader in rushing with 826 yards. He also was second on the squad with 58 receptions.

Virginia kicks off the 2003 season on Saturday, Aug. 30 with Duke at 7 p.m. at the Carl Smith Center, home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium.
