Virginia’s Davis Named MVP Of Tiger Classic

BATON ROUGE, La. – University of Virginia fourth-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) has been named the Most Valuable Player of the Tiger Classic after leading the Cavalier volleyball team to the tournament title. In addition, fourth-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and second-year outside hitter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) have been named to the All-Tournament Team. Virginia won the Tiger Classic, which was held August 29-30 at Louisiana State, with a 3-0 record and won all three matches by identical 3-0 scores.

In the tournament, Davis tallied 40 points, including 33 kills (3.67 per game), while hitting an impressive .388 (33 kills, seven errors, 67 attempts). She also recorded seven digs, six blocks and four service aces. In UVa’s 3-0 win over Centenary Saturday, Davis tallied 15 kills and a .565 hitting percentage. Her 18 total points were also a match high. Davis also had 13 kills while hitting .393 in the Cavaliers’ 3-0 victory over LSU Friday evening.

Boyle hit a sizzling .467 in the three matches of the tournament. She notched 24 kills (2.67 per game) to go along with seven digs and six blocks. Against UAB on Friday, Boyle had 12 kills with no errors in 17 attempts for an impressive .706 hitting percentage. The .706 hitting percentage ranks ninth on UVa’s single game attack percentage list.

Chaney earned All-Tournament Team honors after recording 16 kills, 19 digs and seven blocks. She hit .305 in nine games during the tournament with just two errors. Chaney registered a career-high nine kills against Centenary to go along with 10 digs and three blocks.

UVa opened the Tiger Classic with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 31-29) win over UAB Friday afternoon and then knocked off host LSU 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-23) Friday evening. The Cavaliers wrapped up the tournament with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-18, 30-7) victory over Centenary.

The Cavaliers, who stand at 3-0 on the season, return to action on Tuesday, September 2 when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for a 7:00 p.m. match against James Madison.
