GREENSBORO, N.C. – A pair of Virginia football players earned ACC Player of the Week accolades on Monday.
Guard Elton Brown (Hampton, Va.) was named the Offensive Lineman of the Week, while end Brennan Schmidt (McLean, Va.) captured Defensive Lineman of the Week honors.
Brown graded out at 95 percent in the Cavaliers’ 27-0 shutout of Duke in the season opener. For 75 percent of all rushing yards, the junior was at the point of attack. The then-No. 18/17 Cavaliers rushed for 204 yards, their best output in seven games going back to last year. Virginia had rushed for just two net yards against Duke last season. The junior also blocked Duke’s field goal attempt to help seal UVa’s first shutout since Sept. 26, 1998 (also against Duke, 24-0).
The ACC honor is the second for Brown. He received conference recognition last season following his performance in the upset of No. 22 South Carolina.
Schmidt recorded two sacks, a quarterback pressure and a pass break-up in Saturday’s shutout. The sophomore had seven tackles while helping the defense to its first shutout since Sept. 26, 1998. The Cavalier defense allowed just 272 yards of offense, the second-lowest total in Al Groh’s three years at UVa.
The ACC honor is the first for Schmidt.
The 15th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers (1-0, 1-0 ACC) travel to South Carolina (1-0, 0-0 SEC) on Saturday, Sept 6 for a 12:30 p.m. contest. The Jefferson Pilot Sports Network will televise the game.
