All-Time Series: Friday is the first ever meeting between Virginia and Ohio State in women’s soccer. Sunday is the sixth meeting between Virginia and Dayton with UVa holding a 4-0-1 edge in the series. Although Virginia defeated Dayton in last season’s NCAA Tournament, the teams have not met in the regular season since a 2-2 tie at Dayton during the 1993 season.
Last Time Out: The No. 8 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team topped intrastate rival William & Mary 2-1 at Kl?ckner Stadium. Ariel Thompson and Kelly Hammond scored second-half goals for the Cavaliers, who improve to 2-0 on the young season.
The game was a defensive struggle in the first half, as the Cavaliers had the lone shot before halftime. Virginia would pressure the Tribe in the second half and took the lead in the 67th minute. Sarah Lane sent a ball wide to Noelle Keselica, who crossed the ball into the box. The ball skipped across the goal mouth until Thompson tapped it into the net for her first career goal. William & Mary would tie four minutes later as Lydia Sturgis played a long ball for Katie Hogwood, who reached the ball first in the open field and chipped in a 30 yard shot. Virginia would counter and retake the lead for good in the 86th minute as Sarah Huffman dropped a ball to Hammond at the top of the box. Hammond then blasted a shot to the far post that hit the crossbar and dropped into the goal.
Fourth-year goalkeeper Anne Abernethy made one save for Virginia, while Nikki Villott made three saves for William & Mary. Overall, the Cavaliers outshot the Tribe 11-2 in the game.
