CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team opens the home portion of its 2003 schedule by hosting the Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament Friday and Saturday, September 5-6. The tournament, which features Virginia, Campbell, George Mason, and Liberty, will be held in Memorial Gymnasium, the new home of Virginia Volleyball. Admission to all home UVa volleyball matches is free of charge.
The 2003 version of the tournament opens Friday (September 5) at 5:00 p.m. with George Mason playing Campbell. UVa begins play in the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match against Liberty. Saturday’s (September 6) action begins at 10:00 a.m. with Virginia hosting Campbell. At noon, Liberty plays George Mason. The evening session begins at 5:00 p.m. with Liberty taking on Campbell. The tourney concludes with UVa playing George Mason at 7:00 p.m.
The Cavaliers are playing their home matches in Mem Gym for the first time since the 1998 season. Virginia played its home matches at University Hall the last four years. Mem Gym was renovated this summer thanks to a generous $800,000 contribution to the Virginia Athletics Foundation.
Virginia is off to a 4-0 start in 2003, its best start since winning the first seven matches of the 1999 campaign. The Cavaliers opened the season by winning the Tiger Classic at Louisiana State August 29-30 with three consecutive 3-0 victories. UVa improved to 4-0 with a 3-0 win over James Madison Tuesday (September 2). George Mason stands at 1-3 on the young season, while Campbell and Liberty are both 0-3.
