COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite oushooting their opponents 22-9, the No. 8 Virginia women’s soccer team fell for the first time this season, to Ohio State 1-0 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Collen Hoban’s first half goal stood up to be the winner, as the Cavaliers fell to 2-1 on the season.
“I thought we did enough good things today, especially in the second half, to win the game,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Give their goalies credit, they made the difference. We got the breaks to go our way in the first two games, today they didn’t go our way. This loss is disappointing, but not the end of the world.”
The Buckeyes (3-0) struck in the 27th minute as Danielle Dietrich’s through ball sent Hoban in on a breakaway. Hoban found the far lower corner of the net to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. It marked the first time this season the Cavaliers trailed in a game. Although the Cavaliers outshot the Buckeyes 10-3 in the first half, Emily Haynam made five first half saves to allow Ohio State to keep their 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Cavaliers nearly tied the game three minutes into the second half as newly inserted Buckeye keeper Staci Sinkway saved a point blank chance by Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.). Minutes later Sinkway made another save on a point blank shot, this time on Jamie Fabrizio (Carmel, Ind.). With ten minutes to play, Anne Abernethy kept the Ohio State advantage at 1-0 with a diving save on a Heather Miller counterattack shot. However, the Buckeye defense withstood the Cavalier attack for the remainder of the game and held on for the win.
Virginia continues their weekend trip to Ohio on Sunday as they visit Dayton. Game time at Baujan Field is 1:00 p.m.
