DAYTON, Ohio – The No. 8 Virginia women’s soccer concluded their weekend trip to Ohio Sunday with a 1-1 tie at Dayton. Despite outshooting the Flyers 20-6, Kelly Hammond’s (Bowie, Md.) goal in the seventh minute was the Cavaliers’ lone tally of the contest.
The Cavaliers wasted little time getting on the board, as Kelly Hammond dribbled into the box and fired a near post shot into the net in the seventh minute. The goal was the first first-half goal scored by Virginia this season. Dayton tied the game in the 41st minute as Jen Simonetti headed a Tesia Kozlowski cross into the goal for the equalizer. The game would remain 1-1 at halftime.
The second half featured few chances early, but the Cavaliers almost retook the lead in the 80th minute when Noelle Keselica’s (Gaithersburg, Md.) shot beat Dayton goalkeeper Sarah West, but Jacqueline Luehrs saved the shot off the line at the far post. Virginia continued to pressure the Flyer defense over the final ten minutes of regulation, but could not score and the game went to overtime.
Both teams exchanged chances in overtime, but neither could capitalize and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Overall, Virginia outshot Dayton 20-6 in the game. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made one save for the Cavaliers, while West made eight for Dayton, along with one team save for the Flyers.
Virginia returns home on Friday, September 12 as they host the Virginia Soccer Classic. The Cavaliers will play Santa Clara at 7:00 p.m. That game follows the first game of the tournament between Penn State and Southern California at 4:30 p.m.
