The University of Virginia field hockey team (3-1) allowed Longwood (0-4) only four shots while connecting on five of their own to defeat the Lancers 5-0 tonight at University Hall Turf Field. Five different Cavaliers found the cage, including Lindsay O’Bannon (Fauquier, Va./Fauquier) and Erin Hayes (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley), both of whom scored their first collegiate goals. Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) started in the cage and made a pair of saves before giving way to Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) and Katherine Blair (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Country Day), who combined with Carr on the shutout.
The Lancers had the early edge, getting off two shots and a pair of corners in the opening five minutes of play, but Carr turned away both shots to keep Longwood off the scoreboard. At the other end of the pitch, Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) picked up a bobbled ball at the top of the circle and drew a short corner. On the restart, Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) sent the ball out to Miller, who stopped it for Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Gerfen sent the ball to the left side of the cage, giving the Hoos a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game. Gerfen has notched a point in each of Virginia’s first four games in 2003.
Three minutes later Gerfen sent a free hit up the left sideline for Nicholson, who caught up with the ball and dribbled it into the circle along the endline. She then sent the ball up to Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley), who drew a short corner at the top of the circle. On the play, Nicholson again inserted to Miller, and Phillips rocketed a shot to the right side boards, giving Virginia a 2-0 lead 10:22 into the game.
With time winding down in the half, Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) intercepted a pass above the 25 and sent the ball upfield to Allison Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central), who drew another short corner for UVa. Gerfen’s shot was saved but the ball squirted loose to Hayes, who poked the ball across the endline into the cage for a 3-0 lead with 40 seconds to play in the half. Virginia led 3-0 at the break.
A Link interception again started the next scoring play, which came in the opening seconds of the second half. Link took the ball to the top of the circle where she chipped the ball to the nets for her team-leading third goal of the season as Virginia led 4-0 22 seconds into the second stanza.
With just over 10 minutes to play, Flynn intercepted a ball above the 25-yard line and took it into the circle where she drew another corner. Phillips’ direct shot was saved, but the rebound came to O’Bannon, who was at the post on the right side of the cage. She controlled the ball and stuck it in the boards for Virginia’s fifth goal of the game, which came at the 59:46 mark of the game. The Cavaliers hung on for the 5-0 win.
Carr made two saves in 39:45 minutes of action, and White did not make any saves in her 15:22 minutes. Blair, who played the final 14:53, was called upon to make one save.
Virginia next travels to Richmond, Va. to play the Rams of VCU on Friday, Sept. 12. Game time at Cary Street Field is 7:00 pm.
