The University of Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams will both open their 2003 seasons with the Lou Onesty Invitational, which will be held at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville. Nine teams will compete in the meet, which starts at 10:00 am with the men’s 8K race. The women’s 5K race will follow the men’s competition.

The women, who are ranked #20 in the preseason cross country poll, are coming off their second consecutive berth at the NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers, who were ninth at the 2001 NCAA championships, were ranked all last season and are looking to continue that momentum to return to the national meet. Two other ranked teams, #16 Duke and #25 William & Mary, will also race at this weekend’s meet.

The men, who just missed a ticket to Terre Haute in 2002 for the NCAA meet, are looking to make their first trip to NCAA’s since 1984. They will face their first national test this weekend as one of the schools they will face is #15 William & Mary.

“We have a nice balance of experience and incoming talent,” said head cross country coach Jason Dunn. “This is a great way to start the 2003 season.:”

Results from the cross country meet will be available on virginiasports.com.
