Tonight’s Game: The Cavaliers host perennial power Santa Clara tonight at Kl?ckner Stadium on the first night of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. Virginia enters the week ranked No. 18 by the NSCAA and No. 17 by Soccer America with a 2-1-1 record. Virginia returns home, where they are a perfect 2-0-0 this season, after a 0-1-1 road trip to Ohio last weekend.

The Santa Clara Broncos enter the weekend with a 2-0-2 record and a No. 2 ranking by the NSCAA and a No. 3 ranking by Soccer America. The Broncos have cruised to easy victories this season over San Jose State (9-1) and Pacific (6-1), while playing to a tie with UCLA (1-1) and California (0-0).

Tournament History: Virginia hosts its 16th tournament this weekend. During the past 15 tournaments, the Cavaliers have posted a 22-6-2 record and won the tournament title eight times. However, Virginia is looking for its first tournament title since 1999 this season. Last year, the Cavaliers fell to West Virginia 2-1 and defeated Dartmouth 3-1 in the Virginia Soccer Classic, to finish second behind the Mountaineers.

Elite Competition: The 2003 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic is one of this season’s top tournaments. The event is the first tournament this season that features four teams ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 at the time of the tournament.
