The Virginia field hockey team (4-1) used the roof of the cage to defeat the VCU Rams 2-1 tonight in Richmond, Va. Both Cavalier tallies laced the upper netting of the goals as Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, Va./Allentown) chipped a ball from just inside the circle for Virginia’s first goal and Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central) tipped a Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) free hit to the roof to break a 1-1 tie late in the game. Virginia’s Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) made the start and had two saves in the game.
Virginia jumped on board first as Dana Anderson (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) intercepted a VCU free hit above the 25 and sent it to Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Tex./Trinity Valley) at the top of the circle. Phillips laid the ball off to the right to Nicholson, who tipped the ball forward and chipped the ball to the roof of the cage, putting the Cavaliers on top 1-0 16:31 into the contest. The Cavalier defense allowed the Rams just one shot on goal in the first half and led 1-0 at the break.
In the second half the VCU offense started to generate short corners and on the third such trip to the circle, scored on a scramble in front of the cage as Ashley Caldwallader was able to slip the ball past Carr for the equalizer just 11:24 into the second half. The Rams were able to get off three more corners in the half but the Virginia defense repeatedly turned them away.
Phillips intercepted a VCU pass at midfield and took the ball up the pitch where she was fouled just outside the circle. Bojanic moved up to take the free hit and found Flynn on the right side of the circle, who tipped the ball to the roof of the cage for the 2-1 lead with 7:55 to play in the contest. The assist is Bojanic’s first career point.
From there the Virginia defense held strong and the Cavaliers mustered a corner as time expired to hold on for the win.
The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 as they host the JMU Dukes at the University Hall Turf Field. Game time is 7:00 pm.
