LEXINGTON, Ky. –
The Virginia volleyball team continued its winning ways with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-28) victory over Wright State Friday afternoon (September 12) in the Kentucky Conference Challenge at Memorial Coliseum. The Cavaliers are off to a 9-0 start in 2003, the second best start to a season in school history. UVa is just one win shy of tying the 1996 team’s program record 10-match winning to start the season.
Fourth-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) led Virginia with 14 points. She tallied a team-high 11 kills on 24 attempts (with no errors) for a .458 hitting percentage and added five blocks. First-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Rosharon, Texas/Elkins) contributed seven kills, 12 digs, three assists and a pair of blocks, while fourth-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) added eight kills, three digs and two blocks. Third-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) tied Boyle for team-high honors in blocks with five and also added six kills and two service aces.
Defensively, fourth-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) notched a match-best 21 digs to improve her per game average to 4.8. First-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) led the Cavaliers with 23 assists.
For Wright State (4-3), Tricia Naseman and McKenzie Tiffin recorded double-doubles and combined to put down 31 kills and tally 33 digs. Naseman registered a match-high 18 kills to go along with 14 digs. Tiffin totaled 13 kills and a team-best 19 digs. Setter Nicole Scheltema handed out 38 assists.
The Cavaliers will attempt to tie the best start in school history when they play Syracuse Saturday (September 13) at 10:00 a.m. in the Kentucky Conference Challenge. UVa wraps up play in the tournament at 7:00 p.m. Saturday against host Kentucky.
