CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 18 Virginia Women’s Soccer Team won its own tournament for the first time since 1999 with a 3-0 win over No. 22 Southern California at Kl?ckner Stadium. The Cavaliers put themselves in position to win the title with a 4-1 win over No. 2 Santa Clara Friday night.
“To win this tournament, with three quality teams coming in, will really give our confidence a boost,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We had played well all season, but this weekend we started to convert our chances. Once you start scoring some goals, confidence and morale goes up. We just need to keep this momentum going next weekend.”
Virginia (4-1-1) took little time getting on the board, as Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) scored on the team’s first shot of the game in the second minute. Hammond one-timed a cross from tournament MVP Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) to give the Cavaliers the lead. Virginia would maintain that advantage into the half.
In the second half, the Cavaliers would make the score 2-0 on their first shot of the second half in the 51st minute. Katie Bunch (St. Louis, Mo.) sprung a breaking Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) on the right side. Huffman delivered a cross into the box that was defelected by Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) just inside the far post. Gusick would tally the final goal of the game in the 83rd minute as Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) dribbled along the end line and found Gusick unmarked 10 yards out for the one-timer.Overall, Virginia outshot Southern California 10-6. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made three saves in net for UVa while posting her 13th career shutout. Julie Peterson made four saves at the other end for the Women of Troy (2-3-1).
In addition to the MVP Keselica, Cavaliers Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.) and Huffman were named to the All-Tournament team. Penn State tied Santa Clara 2-2 in the first game of the day to finish second at the tournament.
Virginia will next be in action September 19 at the Dartmouth Adidas/Hypertherm tournament as they play the host Big Green at 3:30 pm.
