Kelly Hammond Named ACC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia women’s soccer second-year midfielder Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) was named ACC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week conference officials announced Monday. Hammond had two goals and an assist on the week, helping the Cavaliers win the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic, the nation’s only tournament to feature four ranked teams this season.

In a 4-1 win over No. 2/3 Santa Clara on Friday night, Hammond’s goal in the 56th minute broke the 1-1 tie and gave the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish. In the 75th minute, Hammond added an assist on an Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) goal.

On Sunday, Hammond scored a goal in the second minute as the Cavaliers defeated No. 22/23 Southern California 3-0.

Hammond has four goals on the season, doubling her 2002 goal total. The honor from the ACC is the first of Hammond’s career, and the first for the Cavaliers this season.

Hammond and the No. 18/17 Cavaliers will return to action this weekend at the Dartmouth Adidas/Hypertherm Tournament in Hanover, N.H. Virginia plays the host Big Green on Friday and Harvard on Sunday.
