HANAHAN, S.C – The University of Virginia women’s golf team stands tenth, with a score of 616 (+40), after the first day of action at the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic. The tourney is the first for the UVa program.
The University of Miami and the University of Notre Dame share the lead after two rounds at 589 (+13). Furman University is in third with a score of 594(+18), and ACC rival North Carolina State came in with a 601 (+25) to hold fourth place.
Miami is riding the back of individual leader Tina Miller, who shot a 139 (-5) in the first two rounds. Notre Dame’s Noriko Nakazaki isn’t far behind in second with a score of 141 (-3). The only other player under par is Mississippi’s Jade Polonich at 143 (-1). Sapna Patel is in fourth with a 145 (+1) for host College of Charleston.
The Cavaliers were led by freshman Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.), who shot a two-round score of 148 (72-76/+4) to be tied for ninth place overall. Freshman Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) is tied for 21st at 150 (74-76/+6). Freshman Kira Mayo (Aventura, Fla.) shot a 160 (79-81/+16) to tie for 55th. Freshman Sally Shonk (Nobelsville, Ind.) finished with a 161 (81-80/+17) to tie at 60th with freshman Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.), who shot a 161 (83-78/+17) of her own.
Play at the Cougar Classic continues on Tuesday, Sept. 16 with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
