WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team won its school record 12th consecutive match by defeating William & Mary 3-0 (30-20, 30-17, 30-25) Tuesday (September 16) at William & Mary Hall. The Cavaliers received a balanced offensive effort in the win as five players recorded six or more kills.
With the victory, UVa improves to 12-0 on the season, extending its program-best winning streak. Prior to the current streak the Cavaliers had never won more than 10 consecutive matches in the 24-year history of the program.
Third-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led Virginia win nine kills and tied fourth-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) for match-high honors in blocks with five. Three of Boyle’s blocks were of the solo variety. She also had seven kills and hit .400 in the match. Fourth-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) tallied eight kills and served up a match-best five aces to go along with five digs. Second-year outside hitter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) also posted seven kills and added six digs. First-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Rosharon, Texas/Elkins) equaled her career-high with 19 digs and contributed six kills to the Cavaliers’ offense.
Fourth-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris), who entered the match ranked second in the nation in digs per game at 5.50, recorded 12 digs (4.0 per game). First-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) nearly recorded a double-double as she had 19 assists and nine digs.
Sarah Long led William & Mary (4-6) with 11 kills and seven digs, while Caitlin Geraghty added eight kills and four blocks. Amy Owens handed out 19 assists and registered nine digs.
The Cavaliers hit .248 in the match while limiting William & Mary to a .106 hitting percentage. Both teams had 41 kills. Virginia held a big advantage in service aces (9-1) as well as blocks (10-5). UVa also held a slight 61-57 edge in digs.
Virginia will try to extend its winning streak when it competes in Davidson’s National Invitational Friday and Saturday (September 19-20) in Davidson, N.C. The Cavaliers play High Point and Boise State on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively. UVa closes out play in the tournament on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. match against Gardner-Webb and an 8:00 p.m. contest against host Davidson.
