Hanahan, SC – In the program’s first tournament ever, the University of Virginia women’s golf team finished ninth, with a score of 924 (+60), at the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic.
The University of Notre Dame broke its tie with the University of Miami to take the title with a score of 889 (+25). Furman University snuck in second with a total of 895 (+31), and Miami finished in third at 897 (+33). ACC rival North Carolina State shot a 908 (+44) to take fourth place.
Miami’s Tina Miller held her lead and took medallist honors with a score of 214 (-2). Miller was the only golfer under par. Notre Dame’s Noriko Nakazaki finished second at 217 (+1). Jenny Suh of Furman fired the round of the day, 70 (-2), to jump into third place at 218 (+2). Mississippi’s Jade Polonich and Charleston?s Sapna Patel tied for fourth at 220 (+4).
The Cavaliers were led by freshman Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.), who shot a 224 (72-76-76/+8) to tie for ninth place overall. Freshman Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) tied for 15th at 226 (74-76-76/+10). Freshman Sally Shonk (Nobelsville, Ind.) came back today with a 76 (+4) to finish tied for 48th at 237 (81-80-76/+21). Freshman Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) tied for 60th at 241 (83-78-80/+25). Freshman Kira Mayo (Aventura, Fla.) came in with a total 242 (79-81-82) to finish tied for 64th.
The Cavaliers will return to action at the Kentucky Wildcat Fall Invitational in Lexington, Ky. October 3-5.
