CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #17 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded a 1-0 shutout victory over the visiting Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers in a non-conference match in front of 743 spectators at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium. The Cavaliers’ Mike Littlefield (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) scored the only goal of the match at 20:23 to lift Virginia to its third win of the season and its second win this year by shutout.
Littlefield scored his goal just over 20 minutes into the match when teammate John Hartman (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) sent a cross into the box. Littlefield got his head on Hartman’s pass and sent it into the Mountaineers’ goal for the lone score of the match. Littlefield’s goal, the game-winner, was his first of the season as his first ever as a Cavalier. He transferred to UVa from Coastal Carolina before the start of the 2003 season. Hartman’s assist was his first of the season and just the second assist of his career. The assist was Hartman’s first collegiate game-winning assist.
UVa goalkeeper Ryan Best (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) recorded four saves in goal to record the second shutout of his career. Mount St. Mary’s goalkeeper Mark Murphy pulled in a game-high 12 saves in a losing effort for the Mountaineers.
With the victory, Virginia’s improves its record to 3-3-0 overall. It marks the first time this season the Cavaliers are at or above .500. The loss drops Mount St. Mary’s record to 3-3-0 on the year. UVa improves to 4-0-0 all time against Mount St. Mary’s, and the Mountaineers have yet to score a goal against Virginia. The Cavaliers have outscored their opposition 13-0 through the four matches in the short series.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Sunday, September 21st when Virginia hosts the #4 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in an Atlantic Coast Conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM at UVa Kl?ckner Stadium. This contest was rescheduled and was originally slated to be played on Saturday, September 20th at 7:00 PM.
Mount St. Mary’s will return to home action on Friday, September 26th when the Mountaineers host Quinnipiac at 3:30 PM.
