CHARLOTTESVILLE – Two members of the Virginia women’s soccer team earned recognition on National Teams of the Week. First-year defender Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.) was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week and second-year midfielder Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. Both were instrumental in the Cavaliers winning the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic last weekend.
Sauerbrunn led a Cavalier defense that had two strong outings last week. Virginia allowed just seven shots in Friday’s 4-1 win over then No.2/3 Santa Clara and just six shots in Sunday’s 3-0 shutout win over then No. 22/23 Southern California. For her efforts, Sauerbrunn was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Hammond had two goals and an assist last week, scoring the game-winner against both Santa Clara and Southern California. She was also honored as the ACC Player of the Week on Monday.
Sauerbrunn, Hammond, and the No. 8/7 Cavaliers will return to action this weekend at the Dartmouth Adidas/Hypertherm Tournament in Hanover, N.H. Virginia plays the host Big Green on Friday and Harvard on Sunday.
