This Week’s Games: The Cavaliers travel to Hanover, N.H. this weekend for the Dartmouth Adidas/Hypertherm Tournament. Virginia will take on a pair of Ivy League foes, playing the host Big Green on Friday and Harvard on Sunday.
Virginia is coming off an impressive weekend in which they won the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic, the nation’s only tournament featuring four ranked teams. The Cavaliers defeated Santa Clara 4-1 and USC 3-0 at Kl?ckner Stadium.
Dartmouth and Harvard both competed at the Harvard Invitational last weekend. Dartmouth went 0-2 on the weekend, falling to Maine 2-1 and Stanford 1-0. Harvard went 1-1, defeating Maine 3-0 after falling 2-1 to Stanford.
Tournament Double: Following last week’s Virginia Nike Soccer Classic title, the Cavaliers enter this week’s Dartmouth Adidas/Hypertherm Tournament looking for their second tournament title of the season. The last time Virginia won two tournaments in the same season was 1997, when the Cavaliers won the Adidas/Lady Footlocker Classic at the University of Portland and their own Coca-Cola Classic.
Coming Home: Friday marks the first time that Steve Swanson will bring a visiting team into Hanover to play Dartmouth, where he got his start as a head coach. Swanson coached the Big Green from 1990-95 and led that program to a 55-35-7 record, two Ivy league titles, and the school’s first two NCAA Tournament appearances. He is still the all-time winningest coach in Dartmouth women’s soccer history. Swanson has coached against Dartmouth before, posting a 1-0-1 record. He led the Cavaliers to a 3-1 win over the Big Green last season in Charlottesville and his Stanford team played Dartmouth to a 1-1 tie at the 1998 Nebraska Invitational.
