Virginia Volleyball To Compete In National Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team is looking to win its fourth tournament of the season and extend their program best 12-match winning streak in this weekend’s National Invitational in Davidson, N.C. The Cavaliers will play four matches in the tournament that will take place on Friday and Saturday, September 19-20. The tournament also features Boise State, Gardner-Webb, High Point, and host Davidson.

Virginia, which stands at 12-0 on the season, is one of only eight remaining undefeated Division I teams in 2003. UVa’s 12 wins tie San Francisco for the most victories in the nation. Nine of Virginia’s 12 victories have come in tournament play as UVa has won the Tiger Classic (August 29-30), the Jefferson Cup (September 5-6) and the Kentucky Conference Challenge (September 12-13).

The Cavaliers open Davidson’s National Invitational on Friday at 10:00 a.m. against High Point (3-10). UVa will also play Boise State (2-8) at 3:00 p.m. Friday. Virginia will square off against Gardner-Webb (5-7) and Davidson (4-6) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively.

Fourth-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) has been named the Most Valuable player of the Jefferson Cup and Kentucky Conference Challenge. In the NCAA Division I Statistics for matches played through September 14, Ashcraft is second in the nation in digs per game with an average of 5.50. As a team, the Cavaliers are 25th in hitting percentage at .273.

Fourth-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) leads the Cavaliers in kills with 163 for an average of 3.98 per game. She also has a .325 hitting percentage. First-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Rosharon, Texas/Elkins) has tallied 111 kills (2.71 per game) and 130 digs (3.17 per game).
