DAVIDSON, N.C. – Fourth-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/UrsulineAcademy) recorded a career-high .909 hitting percentage with 10 kills in 11attempts to help lead the Virginia volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-16,30-21) victory over Boise State Friday afternoon (September 19) in the NationalInvitational at Davidson’s Belk Arena. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to2-0 in the tournament and an impressive 14-0 on the season. UVa opened thetournament with a 3-0 (30-14, 30-20, 30-23) victory over High Point Fridaymorning.
Boyle’s .909 hitting percentage against Boise State is the second-highest inschool history. In 1995 Amy Mitchell hit .923 in a match against Liberty.Boyle also had three digs, two blocks and a service ace in the match.Fourth-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) also hit for a highpercentage in the match as she posted a .529 percentage with 10 kills and justone error in 17 attempts. Third-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./NewTrier) led all players with 11 kills and four blocks, while second-yearoutside hitter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) contributed eight kills andfour digs to the Cavalier effort.
Fourth-year All-ACC libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) led UVa’sdefensive effort with 17 digs. First-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco(Rosharon, Texas/Elkins) also reached double digits in digs with 13 and added sevenkills and two blocks. First-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant)dished out 24 assists and had two of UVa’s four service aces in the match.First-year setter Kathleen Branagh (Lafayette, Calif./Campolindo) had 16 assistsand five digs.
Cameron Flunder led Boise State with nine kills and a .500 hittingpercentage. Christina Melvin handed out 27 assists and tallied six digs, while JackieStroud registered 12 digs.
Virginia, which hit .423 in its match against High Point, tallied animpressive .356 hitting percentage versus Boise State. The Cavaliers had 51 killswith 14 errors in 104 attempts. Boise State hit only .152 with 35 kills. UVaalso held a 50-38 advantage in digs as well as a 6-2 edge in team blocks.
The Cavaliers conclude play in the National Invitational with two matchesSaturday. At 3:00 p.m. UVa will play Gardner-Webb and then Virginia closes outthe tourney with an 8:00 p.m. match against host Davidson.
