CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 17 Virginia men’s soccer team improved to 2-0 in the ACC with a 1-0 upset of No. 4 North Carolina before 2,249 fans at Kl?ckner Stadium on Sunday. Mike Littlefield’s (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) goal just before halftime was all the offense the Cavaliers needed as they shutout the Tar Heels.
Littlefield scored in the 44th minute off a cross from Joe Vide (Raleigh, N.C./Bavarian International School). Vide sent a ball from the right flank to the far post, where Littlefield headed it out of the reach of UNC keeper Ford Williams and into the net. The goal was the second of the week for Littlefield, who also had the lone goal in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Mt. St. Mary’s. North Carolina came close to tying the game in the 57th minute, but Marcus Storey’s apparent game-tying goal was called off due to offsides.
Ryan Best (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) made three saves to post his second consecutive shutout, and the third of his career. Williams made four saves at the other end fot Virginia. The Cavaliers outshot the Tar Heels 11-10 in the contest.
Virginia (4-3-0, 2-0-0) moves to over .500 for the first time this season, while North Carolina (5-1-1, 0-1-0) suffered its first defeat of the season.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday September 24 as they host William & Mary. Game time at Kl?ckner Stadium is 7:00 p.m.
