The University of Virginia field hockey team (5-2) took the early lead as Katie Phillips scored on a short corner in the 17th minute of play, but the Tar Heels (8-0) answered with five unanswered goals to take the victory 5-1 today in Chapel Hill. The Cavaliers’ Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central) forced a corner and Virginia converted, putting UVa up 1-0 with 18:48 to play. Virginia’s Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) had a career-high 12 saves to lead Virginia’s defensive effort.
Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) intercepted a Carolina pass in the midfield and sent the ball up to Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) on the right side. Link passed the ball up to Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) on the endline, who found Flynn in the circle. Flynn drew a corner and on the play, Nicholson inserted the ball to Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Miller flipped the ball to Phillips, who rocketed the ball to the cage for the 1-0 lead. Carolina answered with a goal with two seconds to play before halftime to tie the game 1-1.
In the second half, the Tar Heels took the lead for good on a penalty corner goal seven minutes into the half. UNC tacked on three more goals for the final count of 5-1.
Carr had a career high 12 saves in the game.
Virginia will host Richmond on Wednesday, September 24. Game time against the Spiders is 7:00 pm.
