CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #7 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team fought back on two occasions to tie the match, but the William & Mary Tribe defeated the Cavaliers 3-2 in the first overtime period in front of 1,794 spectators at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium in a non-conference match. Virginia fought back from a 1-0 and a 2-1 deficit to knot the score at 1-1 and then 2-2 to send the contest into overtime. But with 1:59 remaining in the first overtime period, William & Mary’s Bryan Hinkle gave the Tribe a thrilling 3-2 victory when his one-timer from about 25 yards out found the back of UVa’s goal.

William & Mary took an early 1-0 lead just 13:56 into the match when Phil Hucles gathered a loose ball in the box and chipped-in a short shot from about six yards out. But Virginia answered right back just :46 seconds later (14:42) and tied the game at 1-1. After a W&M foul, UVa’s Will Hall (Shirley, N.Y./St. John The Baptist) sent a free kick across the box towards teammate Jeff Tuman (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West). Tuman headed Hall’s cross past the Tribe’s goalkeeper (Kris Rake) and into the goal for the first collegiate goal of his career. Hall’s assist was also his first collegiate assist.

William & Mary scored the match’s next goal and took a 2-1 lead at the 36:40 mark when B. Hinkle sent a corner kick into the box that Kris Feldmann headed past UVa goalkeeper Ryan Best (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) to give the Tribe a one-goal lead. W&M went into the locker room at the half ahead 2-1.

Virginia came out strong on the offensive end in the second period and eventually tied the game at 2-2 at the 72:18 mark when Sean Hinkle (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor), the brother of W&M’s Bryan Hinkle, scored his first career goal when he gathered a pass from Mike Littlefield (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) and fired a shot into goal to tie the game at 2-2. S. Hinkle’s goal eventually sent the game into overtime.

With the game tied at 2-2 and just under 2:00 to play in the first overtime period, the Tribe’s B. Hinkle gave his team the victory when he gathered a loose ball that came out on top of th box and fired a one-timer that found the back of the net for the game-winning goal at the 98:01 mark.

UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely) started the second half and made his first career appearance and pulled in a game-high three saves and kept his team afloat in a losing effort. W&M’s Rake tallied just one save in goal but it was enough in the win.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls the 4-4-0 overall, while the victory improves William & Mary’s record to 5-2-0 on the season. The Cavaliers are now 14-8-4 all-time against the Tribe in men’s soccer, but are now 1-5-1 against W&M since 1998 in the last seven matches played between the two schools.

The Cavaliers will return to ACC action on Sunday, September 28th when Virginia travels to Raleigh, N.C. to face the N.C. State Wolfpack in an Atlantic Coast Conference match. UVa and NCSU are schedule to meet at 2:00 PM at N.C. State’s Method Road Soccer Complex. William & Mary is scheduled to return to home action on Saturday, September 27th when the Tribe hosts the St. John’s Red Storm at 7:00 PM.
